Life changing words and book...
Because most people lack identity and find it too painful to face up to the basic question of life, like "Who am I?" and "What am I for?", consumerism has found it easy to offer distractions and false individualism, supplied by possessions. People differentiate one another by what they own, not who they are, by Having rather than Being. The self of this Homo consumens is experienced as a thing, to be bought and sold just like a car or house.
